Green Gardeners? The low down on manure.?
Okay so where I work we have a HUGE old manure (horse/cow/chicken/goat) pile that’s composted its way into dark rich soil ( been there 3 years).. Its been offered to garden clubs, farmers, locals, the public in general as the soil here is Truly awful. Sandy nasty mess.
What I don’t get is people would rather go buy a bag of commercially/chemically treated compost then put a shovel in the heap? What gives with that? I use it at home and my garden thrives..the stuff has practically no weed seeds, none Have sprung up in my garden anyway.. and thousands of huge earth worms in it.. How can people call themselves “green” gardeners if they use the plastic raped/chemically cleaned/sterilized compost?
from what I see, it’s the ‘EEEEWWWWW” factor…. it’s only those gardeners who LOVE to get down and dirty that don’t have that in their vocabulary or system….. somehow, to those ‘ew’ folks, the stuff is bags has been ’sterilized’ or something, so they won’t get any of it ON THEM!!…… LOL!….
you are SO LUCKY!!!…. there’s a horse barn up the road from here, but someone keeps carting the goodies away!!!… Grrrrrr!!….
