how long would this take…?
I bought a 2 year old (now 3) gelding last summer, and so far he knows how to lunge w/t, and i’ve started him under saddle and he knows how to steer, walk/trot (sitting, posting, two point), and he has also done poles walk/trot on the lunge line, and walking over poles under saddle. Between now and next spring I hope to be doing walk/trot/canter under saddle. I will not start jumping him until he is 4 which is on April 26/2009.
My question is, based on where we are now, how long do you think it will take to be able to show in the hunter divisions (over fences) at shows?
I know that all horses are different, and some take way longer then others, but please just give me an estimate of the time frame you think it should take? My horse is very eager to learn and he learns stuff pretty quickly.
thanks, i will choose best answer
Once you get walk trot canter u/s down, go to a schooling show. Even if youre jumping him at the time, don’t jump in the show. Just do flat classes. Enter yourself in two divisions, that way if you think he was really good and dont want to push it, you can scratch, or you can keep going, et cetera.
Since youre not planning to jump until age 4, it usually takes about a year of consistant work until he’ll know how to jump a full course, do lead changes, et cetera.
With my 3 year old, im walk trot cantering him. We just started learning our lead changes and do little crossrails once a week just to start off. Hes very mature for his age and my vet even said he looks like he could be four, so if I really wanted to I could jump him. I already took my horse to his first show and just shows walk trot canter- he was great. Now next summer when Im jumping him more I can jump at the show and not have to worry about it being a whole new experience.
So Id say work with your horse for about a year until you jump him at a show. If he gets jumping quicker or looks nicer earlier, then try a show earlier. Even if its only doing one jumping class or just schooling, its work it in the long run. Try to make showing a good experience by taking it slow and making it relaxed and enjoyable.
