what is everything i need to own my own horse and how much will it cost?
including annual vet care farrier and supplies i ride western if it matters i have a place to board so i know the price of that
I agree with what other users have said. Horses’ literally cost thousands annually. The worst time is through winter. That’s when you’ll find you burn holes in your pockets.
First off, you need somewhere to put it. So you need to pay for boarding. Then comes the equipment you’ll need. (General speaking).
- You’ll need tools; shavings/straw fork, shovel, wheelbarrow, yard brush.
- Not to mention clothing for yourself, and your horse.
- Especially through winter, when the worst of weather hits. It’s recommended you have at least one of each type of rug (stable, cooler, fleece, turn out, fly sheet/mask, summer sheet).
- Tack – saddle, bridle, saddle pads, halters, lead ropes, lunging equipment (lunge reins, side reins, lunging/schooling whips), different boots if necessary; over reach or brush boots.
- And if your thinking about any type of showing, of course show clothing for yourself and the horse, travelling equipment – travel boots/travel bandages, tail guard/tail bandage.
- Of course, then comes the feed. Whatever the choice of feed the horse has, plus hay/haylage, grains/oats, treats, licks or mineral blocks. And feeding equipment; feed/water buckets, utensils (stirrers), haynet/mangers.
- Bedding; straw, shavings, flax, hemp, rubber matting, paper.
Not to mention the general welfare of the horse; vet bills, farrier every 6-8 weeks, dentist, physiotherapy for back problems, worming. And of course Insurance!
Horses’ are great responsibility.
