Is there a way to tell with a weanling or yearling how tall they will be when they mature?
I’ve heard of ways to measure on the front leg and double this and that is how tall it would be at maturity. I’ve also heard about measuring a certain bone and (for example) if it is 14 1/2 inches, the horse will mature to 14.2 hands. Is all this b.s. or does somebody know how to tell? I’ve just spent the past half hour measuring on my patient horse and can’t figgure it out.
The reason I ask is I’m going shopping this weekend (I perfer stalls to malls) and one I want to look at is a grade yearling who’s owner died and the family doesn’t know much about the horse.
Any help would be great!
I bought my gelding that I have still when he was a long yearling and I had heard those test myths all my life so I thought what the heck I will try it and find out. The one test that I tried I took the measuring tape and measured from the center of his knee to the top of his hoof (coronet band) and I got 16 inches that means he will mature to 16 hands so I said alright lets try the other test and see where it get me and that test was to take a measuring tape, string or what ever and to measure from the shoulder to the top of the hoof, than from the should to up to where the measurement was at the other end and that will tell you the height. In one of these it said he would be 16 hands and in the other it said 15.3+ and he is 16 hands. In my experience they work and I would do them again and again. Several of my friends have tried these methods as well to find results as well. Hope this helps and Good Luck.
