Why are purebred broodmares so much cheaper than geldings?
I am starting to look for a horse and my dream horse is a dutch warmblood – specifically a Hanovarian. I was looking at a warmblood listing site and there were loads of 8/9/10 year old pure bred Hanovarian mares with top bloodlines for a couple of thousand dollars. I appreciate that a broodmare may have lost out on a few years of training, but that didn’t justify the price reduction (One was the dam of an olympic dressage horse). Does being a broodmare have a physical impact on the horses? Or is there another reason why the price is so low. Here is the site http://www.warmbloods-for-sale.com/
What I meant was – why are broodmares cheaper than geldings when a normal mare is not that much different in price if you look in other listings. I know mares can be ‘mare-ish’!
Most broodmares have never been trained to do anything except to be broodmares. Most geldings have been trained to do something by the time they reach that age.
