How can get my horse to stay cantering/trotting?
Ok, when i ride my horse, he’ll trot,(jumping a little while doing so) then he gets into this half trot/canter thing. Then i go into a canter and then he always goes into a hard trot, then i will squeeze to get back into a canter (sometimes using a crop if he is being stubborn that day) and he stops dead, and I have to do it all over again with the same results.
Any way to get him to stop?

Okay im going to go against most of the advice here so far. I never liked trying to fix a problem by increasing the punishment (ie spurs, whips etc etc) Often that route causes more problems than it fixes.
Think of it like this, if you talk to someone and they dont listen, so then you shout. What you have done is actually taught them to ignore your voice at normal level. Its only a matter of time before they ignore your shouts. Then where do you go ? you see the problem.
On the other hand, next time someone doesnt react to your normal voice, try whispering, they often have to stop what they are doing and listen really hard to hear what you are saying.
Training the horse works in exactly the same way. I have backed many horses and its very much a case of “you reape what you sow”
ALWAYS go back a pace from the one your having problems with. So in this case, don’t let him canter and develop his trot. Work at achieving an easy, active a rhymic pace in working trot that isnt hurried or reluctant. Rhythm is the most important thing here. Everything else will develop from that. Once you have a really good working trot with your horse working enthusiastically but submissively into the bit you can introduce some very basic lateral work (if your not sure how ask in another post)
The most important thing in this trot work for you is to really make sure your horse is comming OFF your inside leg so activating the inside hind. (not merely moving outwards because your outside leg prevents that and keeps the horse straight) Allow with your inside hand, “Catch” the impulsion with your outside hand.
In a good working trot, start in a 20m circle and practice gradually decreasing the circle then increasing it again back to 20m.
When you and your horse is finding that easy and maintaining the rhythm, cadence, engagement thoughout the circle changes you are ready to start working on the transition to canter.
As a general rule, horse are trained far more through correct transitions than the paces.
Ride in your 20m circle in the best working trot you can achieve. When you feel your horse is really springing off your inside leg but still being submissive and accepting your outside leg and hand, ask for the canter by moving your outside leg back (how much depends on the horses level of training, with a baby i would put my leg on its rump if neccassary for it to understand what i wanted, Leg further back, NOT harder, important!!! a fully trained horse the riders leg movement will be so imperceptable as to be competely unseen by the judge), your outside hand closes slightly and importantly, GIVE with your inside hand. So many people ride with their inside hand instead of their inside leg. As you advance more you will be adjusting your seat bones so as they say “you sit a little deeper on your inside seat bones” but dont worry too much about that just now. I would far rather see a good balanced seat at this stage. Only ride a few good balanced strides in canter then transit back to trot. Am at achieving these transitions without loosing balance or impulsion. As the horse improves the transitions you can increase the number of canter strides. This way he will soon be happy and capable to maintain the good canter you are after
