Triumph Horse Feed

How to change a horses feed schedule?

I am moving barns soon, and the barns have different feed schedules. The one he is currently at feeds at 7:30 am, 12 noon, and 3 p.m. The one we are moving to feeds at 7:30 am, 12 noon, and 9:00 pm- a big change. I hear that if you change a horse’s schedule too quickly they are likely to colic. What do you recommend.

Also, the barns have different grains. One has nutrena complete and the other has nutrena triumph. Is it ok to just change his grain right away?

What you need to do is arrange to change both the schedule and the feed slowly.

Take a couple of weeks worth of his old feed with you when you move. Start out giving him his old food, then mix a little of the the new food with with. Gradually change the ratio of new food to old food over about a week or so until he is completely on the new food. As for the schedule, the first two feeding times won’t change, so you only need to worry about the third. The second or third day he is at the new place, feed his third feeding about half an hour late. Feed is half an hour later each day until he is getting it at 9 pm.
