Training A Yearling Colt

POLL: what do you think of the competition “Road to the Horse”?

For those of you that don’t know it is a natural horsemanship competition in which top Natural Horsemanship clinicians are given 3 hours over 2 days to break a completely green horse to ride using there own natural horsemanship techniques. they then ride the colt/filly through and obstacle course.

Personally i don’t like it, i know the horses aren’t hurt and are treated well, but still a year and a half year old colt should not be ridden two days after its training began. they really shouldn’t be ridden at all actually. that’s like asking a 7 year old to do algebra in two days, they could probably do it, but they shouldn’t! not to mention that its not good for a still growing yearling to carry a 200lb man around an obstacle course.

So what do you all think? i know im going to get very divers opinions but be honest! :)

I am not a “natural horsemenship” enthusiast. I have started hundreds of young horses. I was lucky enough to have clients that didn’t need (or want) a 30 day wonder. Each young horse let me know when they were ready to move on in their training. If they hit a plateau and needed some time then I sent them home to grow up and saved the horse’s body and mind and clients pocketbook.

For most young horses 2 days is too quick. They will be mentally and physically exhausted. Being compliant because of exhaustion is not training.
