Trailer Loading A Horse

Loading a horse into a straight load trailer?

I know you generally dont walk in with the horse so do you just drop the lead rope? like what do you do with it?

and do you secure the butt bar before or after they are clipped to the bungee?

Depends on how your horse is trained.

I prefer to train my horses to ’self-load’ for MY safety.
Imagine if you are leading a horse in, and it barges into you- smooshing you against the side of the trailer?
No thanks. They can walk in there by themselves!

I stand by the side of the ramp and ask them to go up- My horses walk right up and I throw the leadrope over their necks to keep it out of the way.
As soon as they are in, I secure the butt-bar so that they cannot back out, and then walk around to tie them up.
I then walk back around and put up the ramp.
Easy!

Some horses will not go onto the trailer by themselves- in which case you would lead them in, tie them up, and THEN go secure the butt-bar and ramp.

Hope that helped:)
