Is it safe to go for long trail rides?
Because cremellos have pink skin and blue eyes, they can easily get sun burnt, and eventually cancer. I have been looking @ horses for sale and some are cremellos. I want to trail ride and I was wondering if it was safe to go on looong trail rides if I put sunscreen on? Or should I not get a cremello at all for trails?
It will definitely be okay. I had a cremello stallion a few years back, and I went out and put sunscreen on him in the mornings in the summer, and that’s all. He was on 24/7 pasture with a run-in shed, although he chose to stand in the sun most of the day. I never had any problems at all with sunburn. So I think that as long as you apply sunscreen you’ll be fine.
You could also get a fly mask made for riding to cover him up a little better… I think Cashel makes a good one.
Edit—
Oh, and on sunny days I often put a fly mask on him.
