How can I buy things in other countries?
I live in Ontario, Canada… and I’m going to do a working student position at an eventing barn in PA.
I will need to buy things such as clothes/tack and especially food… does anyone know of an appropriate card that I can use down there with no difficulties other than a Visa?
My last resort I’m bringing cash but I’d rather not.
Anyone who has been a working student in other countries, I’d love your opinion… or Canadians who have gone shopping when spending a longer amount of time in the US.
Thanks!
All the major credit cards translate well to the US. VISA is the most widely accepted though.
You can also use your bank card to access cash at ATMs run by the major US banks, as most of the Canadian banks have taken to including PLUS encoding on the bank cards. Use on independent ATMs or those run by smaller banks may or may not work. The same with using a Canadian bank card as a debit card in the US — might work, but usually won’t. As with credit cards, the currency conversion is done automatically. The bank machine spews out US bills, and your account will be debited whatever the Canadian$ equivalent is. It used to be that you could only withdraw from a US Dollar account, but with the currency staying at par so long, most banks now let you do it even with a Canadian dollar account.
You’ll still get shafted on the fees, but it’ll be less than using a Canadian credit card in the USA.
