Why give a horse sweet feed instead of oats?
I lived in Ohio as a child and the farmers there fed their horses oats. Once I moved to a southern state I noticed that everyone uses sweet feed? Why not feed oats in the south?
Like Ponygirl said, Sweet feed was used for medicines and supplements, so the horses couldn’t eat around it because it would stick to the molasses. Now people buy it because A. Its cheap. B. Its what they have always fed their horses. C. Their horses like it.
I feed a mixture of Nutrena Safe Choice pellets and sweet feed. I only put a little sweet feed in, it gives it more flavor for my ladies as well as keeps them from eating around their supplement.
