We are showing milking shorthorn cattle for the 1st time & would like to know what equip to buy?
In particular I would like to know what clippers work best, what brushes, adhesives & shampoos people recommend.
we buy our equipment and grooming supplies from Sullivan’s show supply. They are fair in price, stand behind what they sell, and sometimes they have used equipment you can buy. You need a blow dryer, scotch comb, rice root brush, Andie’s clippers, revive, fly spray. As far as adhesives that is a personal preference. We only wash when its is time to clip or show because the soap will dry their skin and hair out. And we use the cheapest dish soap it seems to be less harsh than some of the soaps you can buy. If you rinse your calf daily, comb all the hair forward, spray with revive then use the rice root to brush it in again forward and blow most the water out you will have the most important thing done. Training the hair!! Then when it comes to show day who ever is fitting you calf has not problems and you will have good hair to work with. I know that may sound funny but GOOD hair is one of the most important things. It requires a little more time but the end result is definitely worth it.
