Hey Hollie.
I’m Maddie. I’ve shown through 4-h for two years now and have been around horses most of my life. So, I’m just going from memory here. =)
Arabians are great horses… but they tend to be high-strung. They were breed for endurance so they usual are fast-paced and not really for begginers. They’re great for English contesting, though, because most of them can go for hours without getting worn out.
Clydesdale and other forms of draft horses are more commonly used for farm work and cart areas. They tend to be gentle giants… but, they’re rather big. You don’t often use them for riding… more of cart and work. Same for most other draft horses.
Now, depending on what you wanted to use the horse for and what type of riding you do, I’d recommend a Quarter Horse. I guess it all depends on preference, but I haven’t went wrong with any Quarter Horses. They’re level headed and great for beginners or experienced riders alike. If you’re into Western riding… they’d be great for that. Or, maybe even English if you had them broke for that.
If you do English riding, I’m not all that certain what to recommend. Prehaps an Arabian would do good in that area. I’ve also seen Halflingers in those classes. But, I halflinger is more of a pony than a horse.
To tell a pony from a horse you messure in hands. A hand is equal to four inches. To be considered a pony, the horse must be 14 foot and two inches or smaller. Horses are anything taller.
Tack tends to vary depending on wether you want to ride English or Western. As for feed, we own eight horses that are ours. Usually we feed them a bit of grain if we’ve ridden them… and toss them hay twice a day. Hay prices vary per bale… it all depends on the weather that year and where you live.
I hope that was of some help to you. Please email me if you need some more help! I hope you enjoy your new horse. =)
-Maddie
