is it safe to ride a horse in a round pen?
I used to occasionally have a friend lunge my horse while I ride but no volunteers as of late. Then I realized that we have a round pen at my barn. I have never used one at all but I worry that being smaller than a normal arena, she’ll run me into the edge and I’ll get a foot stuck in the fence and end up in a very uncomfortable position. It’s a sort of pipe gate fence that you typically see for round pens and I would guess it to be about a 20 meter circle.
How broke is your horse? Round pens can be dangerous so make sure that if you do ride in one that you are always wearing a helmet! Nothing is worse then smacking your head up against the metal poles. Also if your horse has a habit of trying to rub you off its back make sure that you are anticipating this and start to pull the horse away before it can rub you against the side. It sounds like your horse needs to learn manners so perhaps first start with longing for respect on the ground in the round pen before you even try to ride the horse in the pen.
