Curing ringworm in Cattle?
I have two show calves and one has gotten ringworm. The cattle in the feedlot on my farm also have ringworm, but they separated by a 10 ft. ally. I have been treating my calf with Weladol soap on all the spots daily. Is there anything better? The fair that they will be shown in isn’t until July 15th, but I am worried about the other calf too. Will they recover in time? I am also going to be getting some holstein calves to show too and they will be in a pen next to these ones. Is it preventable? What are fastest treatments for ringworm? Thank YOU!
PS: sorry i put this in the horses category, but i think that more “livestock people” will see it here rather than under skin diseases:)
Ringworm is a fungus. Any antifungal cream on the spot 2-3 times a day should clear it up within a week or so. Hair takes a bit longer to grow back. The vet can prescribe a cream, but it will be more expensive than going to walmart and getting jock-itch/ athletes foot cream (says anti-fungal on it). I don’t know if there are bulk items to treat your whole herd- maybe at a livestock store. Make sure it is an antifungal cream.
Ringworm is a weird thing that pops up randomly. I read somewhere than 80% of cats are reserviors for it, but rarely show it unless they are stressed. It usually comes through a cat scratch in dogs and people, but I think there are other sources as well. Sounds like your main cattle pen may be a reservior for it.
It enters through an cut. If there are no cuts, the ringworm can’t enter.
Once you treat it and completely get rid of it in all of your cows, clean the pens up well with some bleach, and it should get rid of it.
I would treat the calf’s spots of ringworm, then disinfect their pen and the Holstein’s pen, and you should be fine as long as you minimize contact between the calves and the cattle. However, this also might mean using different pitchforks, cleaning boots in between, etc. Until you get rid of it in your whole herd, it will most likely keep coming back.
