Im too scared to drop the reins when riding one handed in Western Pleasure?
I have the Quarter horse nationals next week and when i ride at home i ride in a twisted snaffle shank so that when i go showing and have to use a correctional his mouth responds better. Im just not confident that when im riding one handed in my correctional and i have to put the reins down in a drape when im in a class that he wont speed up and run off. he doesn’t normally. when training my calves are on him all the time and he stays but i get scared when i show if i put my calves on he will speed up. anything i can do to overcome this quickly?
If you’re in Nationals, you and your horse are good enough. Keep that firmly in mind!
If you drape the reins and he speeds up too much, you’ll just have to correct him and hope the judge isn’t watching. It’ll probably only take one correction and then you’ll be fine.
You aren’t going to get hurt, humiliated, or shunned if he goes a little faster. You may not win, but that’s not the end of the world.
Just do your best and help him do his best; that’s all that can be asked of you and if you do that you can be proud of yourself no matter what the judge’s decision is.
