Horse training question…?
My horse used to do a lot of reining exercises before he was sold to me, but I’ve been trail riding him for two years and he’s gotten out of the groove. I’m just wondering, what cues do I give him to make him spin? (I’m not very familiar with reining, sorry if that’s the wrong term.)
As a professional reiner who show’s in Open NRHA and NRCHA show’s this is how most reiners train and get the spin perfected—
While someone else mentioned to ask the equine to back up while laying the rein on the outside neck may seem like the right thing to do, it’s not and many novice people end up training their equine to spin like this and it never looks like a clean cut job.
To ask for a spin to the right you will ask for your equine to step off on a right lead. Sit square in the saddle, do not shift your weight as this will cause your horse to move his rib cage opposite of the direction you are asking. With your inside leg you will move slightly back about two inches while moving your outside leg up and pressed against your equine’s shoulder. You will also lay your outside rein on your equines neck.
When your horse steps off on his right lead, press with your outside leg while laying on your outside rein. Since your equine hasn’t done this in a while I would start in small steps. Your horse should step over his right foot with his left. When he does so, release the pressure, and repeat. Warm him up doing this. For the left spin you will do the same just opposite side- this mean’s left side you will ask for him to step off on a left lead, and for a right reach.
When your horse get’s comfortable and is reaching over his front feet like he is suppose to, then progress by asking him to do a 180, and then pursue a 360 turn. Pretty soon you’ll have him spinning like a champion again.
****And to let you understand the not asking for a back up command- the reason this is is because when you ask for equine to sit back he cannot stretch and reach over his forelimbs properly, most people who teach their horse to spin this way find that their equine either hops all the way around in a circle while pivoting on their hind end, or only able to turn 1/4 of the way.
