Red Brahman

Why is this Brahman calf red?

How did we end up with a red calf out of a registered grey Brahman heifer bred to a registered grey Brahman bull? There are absolutely NO other bulls that could have bred with this particular heifer!

I would assume the red trait is recessive to the grey trait.

Think about human hair color, with blond hair being recessive to brown hair. If a blond woman and a brown haired man have a child, it will have brown hair but it will still carry the blond trait inherited from its mother. Two such people could have a blonde child.
