What are the benefits of the different western saddles?
Im looking into buying a western saddle but im not sure which kind to get. I do trails and pleasure riding, western eq and pleasure and some gymkana. What are the benefits and differences between the saddles?
(roping,cutting,ranch,barrel,trail, show, reining, penning, all purpose)
Ok just a few here. The whole answer to this question would be pages long. Rosi is the one you need to talk to. But basically I will give you a little..
Roping, strong horn to rope with (you would tear the horn off most other saddles if you try to tie a rope on the horn) and a seat that you can get out of quickly to tie the calf’s legs.
Cutting, deeper seat to keep you in on the quick turns also large swells often swept back. Horn long and rawhide wrapped to be a handle when making sharp turns.
ranch, deep seat sometimes with swept back swells you are not in competition so do not have to hurry out of the saddle to tie calf’s legs. Some have hard seats some soft. Just depends.
barrel. Deep seat and swells, a lot like a cutting saddle but usually built lighter for speed.
Trail. generally a fairly deep seat (not as deep as barrel or cutting) Soft seat designed for long rides. Some have horns that you can tie a small log or something to but not strong enough to use as a roper.
Show. Just that…decorated to show in. May or may not have the features of another saddle.
Reining (I think these are mostly like a cutting saddle but am not sure)
Penning like a cutting saddle but typically with a horn you can do light roping work with.
All purpose. Saddle good for multiple disciplines but which ones depends on the saddle you get.
