Raising Beef Cattle Profit

How do water statistics make sense in farming?

I read a statistic in National Geographic magazine that it takes 1,857 gals of water to produce 1 lb. of beef. If so, How do farmers stay in business when a lb. of beef goes for about $6 to $7 per pound? Wouldn’t the cost in water alone to raise cattle kill any profits?

You do not know much about who makes the actual money in Beef do you ??

Ranchers if market conditions are good, gross about $1.00-1.20 per pound of animal if they are lucky. The meat packers process the animals, cut up and wrap the beef or send large parts of the animal to the Grocery stores who finish cutting and wrapping the beef for you to buy. From the time the animal leaves the rancher’s posession, each and every time the animal/beef is sold and bought the price is DOUBLED.

THAT is why you are paying $6.00-$10.00 per pound for beef.

Water is not a finite object like a tray of cookies. Water is constantly being recycled and purified by both nature and man. Even considering that 1857 gallons means cattle would be only drinking about 2.5 gallons per day. People (you included) drink/wash/bathe flush the toilet every day and use A LOT more than that !!
