Do they have senior food specifically for guinea pigs?
I have a senior cavy and was wondering if they have food specifically designed for her now that she is older, I’m assuming she needs more nutrition than younger guinea pigs. I know they have senior food for dogs and cats so I thought senior pigs might be the same. thanx!
Some people feel that a lower protein timothy based chow is better for older pigs. The reasoning is that the 18% alfalfa based pellets have too much calcium causing bladder sand and kidney stones and make pigs fat.
Our take is that you can change if you are seeing evidence of either of these problems but you don’t need to 1) if your pig is neither fat nor showing signs of urinary system problems and 2) you provide plenty of good quality grass hay. Bodies are pretty good at telling their owners what they need and with plenty of grass hay your pig can lower its protein intake if that is the signal the body is sending to the appetite. We raise Peruvians which have long coats and require more protein. We keep them on 18% protein throughout their lives and have not had UT nor weight problems
Timothy hay is good but any good grass hay (except fescue) is a fine. Pet stores sell bagged timothy (expensive) and feed stores usually have a variety of hays available in bales or bags (much less expensive)
