Pet shop dogs are puppy mill dogs. It’s a fact. They buy them from brokers who buy from puppy mills. This is fact, not speculation or paranoid delusion. So what’s the problem? Puppy mill dogs are typically kept in confined, unsanitary conditions. Maintaining a breeding population of 50 adult dogs in a sanitary environment is costly and prohibitive, so puppy mills don’t bother keeping it sanitary and safe as this would cut into profits. The puppies are not vaccinated and after crawling around in filth are often quite sick by the time they hit the pet store shelves and many require veterinary attention or even die after they are purchased.
Oh, but some puppy mills use wire flooring on their crates so the urine and feces just drop to the floor below. Problem solved? Wire flooring damages a dog’s feet. Puppies’ legs slip through it and become stuck or are easily injured.
Watch a few documentaries on puppy mills and backyard breeding before you buy one of these dogs from a pet shop. Also be aware that you can’t trust the owner because they’ll just deny it and say their policy is not to reveal their sources. Puppy mill papers are also often forgery and the dogs often don’t even conform to breed standard.
A thousand bucks for a puppy mill dog or a thousand bucks for a champion show-quality dog of the same breed from a reputable breeder that would never, ever endanger, harm, or otherwise mistreat their dogs? It depends–is a dog’s life and well-being worth putting at stake because you don’t want to be put on the waiting list for the next couple of litters from a reputable breeder?
