New Puppy, Need Advise.?
i just got a new puppy shi-tzu she is less than 2 months old, i already own a shi-tzu but i got him when he was 4. what do i need to know. eg what supplies do i need, do i feed her milk since she is so young, do i set up litter box. what should i expect i wanna keep her healthy and i was told that this is the most critical time in the pets life.
What do i do with her when i go to work for 8 hrs a day, will she be o.k alone should i put her in an enclosed area, or can i leave her to run about the house
This is the most critical time for her in many ways — if she is less than 7 weeks old she really should still be with her litter as she still has lots to learn about being a dog. If she is 7 weeks or older, she is entering a time when she learns most of what she needs to know about living in the human world.
No — don’t feed her milk — most mammals except for humans slowly lose the capacity to adequately digest milk as they mature and it can cause diarrhea in a large enough quantity. Talk to your vet or breeder about what quality dog food would be good for her. (I like HundnFlocken/Solid Gold wee bites; Nutro Small Breed Puppy and Iams Small Breed Puppy myself. I believe Royal Canin makes a Shih Tzu blend — their foods are good quality, too.) Don’t feed her canned food — it is better for them to eat dry food, dry.
Litter training is a possibility — is your 4 yo litter trained? If so, I would do the same for her. With a puppy it is important to put them on a schedule for pottying, and keep them on it. Generally for the wee ones, I try to take them out evey 1 – 2 hours and make sure they go.
Talk to your vet about her spay appointment — you want to do that before her first heat cycle if possible. Many Shih Tzus cannot whelp naturally and need C-Sections — you do not want to put her thru that.
Find a good trainer or class — that will help you get your puppy on the right track.

Edit — I am a firm believer in crate training — you can even use an exercise pen and put a crate inside with the door open and her litter box if you need to. Dogs are den animals and the crates become their “rooms” or dens. She will be much safer and less likely to get in trouble if she is confined.
