Natural Horsemanship where can I find an inexpensive method?
I have looked into Pat Parelli and John Lyon but both of their methods are extremely pricey. The horse I ride tends to get really freaked out at shows, when she is away from her stable buddies. So I want to work on helping her with her anxiety but I also want to be able to build a stronger bond with her and be able to work better with horses in general.
What methods do you use and do you have any hints in general?
I have seen both methods and only problem I have found is that the videos and books are a little to general for most problems. A lot of good has come from them since the have educated people in a more humane way to train horses, but most people carry this to the extreme and do no disciplining to their horses at all. And this really adds to a problem, since you have a horses that does not respect you. The best training tool you have is right between your ears. It takes common sense to train a horse. If your horse freaks out, then you need to look for the trigger that causes it. My horse would freak at shows. The cause: Me. He was young and I looked for spooky things ahead of time and would tense when he got near them. So he tensed and it just got worse from there. If you stay calm, then your horse will calm down over time. There is no such thing as a quick fix. This is some of the best advice I ever got: “A tired horse is easier to get along with”. Go ride and show this horse all of the sights and sounds you can. Go to a roping and let them see all of the noise and activity there. Tie them up and just let them stand and absorb everything at a show. Take your horse to an open show and just ride around. They will figure out that nothing is going to eat them after awhile. If you still have problems, ask a trainer for some advice. Most are happy to share it with you, since they all started out the same way. Training a horse is a long slow process, but worth it in the end, when you cna produce a quality animal. Good Luck!
