is it required to cut a paint horses mane for horse shows?
I just bought a 3 year old paint/quarter horse who is registerd as a pain, and I was going to cut her mane like ive seen and i know how but i was told that they are starting to not cut the mane. I was wondering if it requierd to be cut or do i just leave it?
This really depends on the disciplines you wish to show in as well as the level with which you will be competing. As the previous answers state in the hunter/jumper ring you are required to have the mane banged to 3 inches. In the western divisions it is not as clear cut. The halter and western pleasure horse traditionally has its mane banged like the hunter but with the western performance horse, usually the longer the better. This all changes again if you are show at the breed show level. If you wish to show at that level then it is best to consult the breeds rulebook. If you will only be competing at local open shows then it is most often allowable to have a well cared for natural mane.
