pregnant rabbit due any moment now?
I bought a rabbit last week at a livestock auction. Well I brought her home to find out she was pregnant. I have only had three rabbit litters my entire life of owning rabbits. One was accidental, another was a abused rabbit I bought pregnant, and the last was a pregnant rabbit I got from the neighbors because they didnt want the babies. Anyways as you can see although I have had some experience with this, I dont know every exact detail. But my question is, how soon before the doe gives birth, does she make a nest? I though it was anytime between a day or two before the kits birth and after the birth of the kits. But I was looking online and it says that nest can be made 2-3 weeks before actual birth. Well my rabbit started a nest earlier today with just hay.I went to check on her this evening and she had lined it completely with fur. Now I first though she was due to have her kits by tomorrow morning. Is this true, or can it take longer?
It varies a lot between does. The average time is 2 days before birth. Some does will build as early as 2 weeks in advance (any earlier is generally a false pregnancy), and some will only build 10 minutes before the litter is due!
If you gently put your hands on her abdomen and apply a very light pressure with your whole hand and wait, you should be able to feel little flutters and twitches as the kits move around and kick out. You will be able to feel this from 10 days before they will be born and it will be stronger the closer she is. Good luck with the litter!
