Ocd Supplement For A Horse

Are there any supplements for horses with OCD.?

I know that there are some out there, but I cant find any. By the way, OCD is a joint disorder – not the mental disorder in humans.

Depends on how serious the OCD is. If it’s minor reducing the horse’s weight a little and supplementing with copper, cobalt and zinc is the best way to go. A more serious OCD will cause a piece of cartilage to break free (called a joint mouse by most vets I know) and floator flap around in the joint. The only sure way to cure that is surgery.

When I got my gelding as a yearling (he was given to me by a former employer) he was suspected of having an OCD in his right hind fetlock. My former boss couldn’t afford the vet bill to get him checked out, nor could she afford to feed him for the rest of the year. I got him back to my place, put him on stall rest with limited turn out, and supplemented with Copperquine, and a mineral block and grain that had higher rates of copper, cobalt and zinc in it to ensure the joints would close properly without problems. Four months after I got him and put him on the regimen, the vet took extensive x-rays and told me he was clear to start training that fall.

I still waited until the next year to start his training, just to be sure, but I haven’t had any problems since.
