what is the best and easiest way to teach a horse to neck rein without force thanx
she is 8 years old guess they trained her without neck reining
You can actually do it with one hand, but the principle remains the same…just as you get ready to turn left, let just a little of the right rein slide, this puts just a hair more pressure on the left side, simulating two handed reining with one hand. You ask, why would I want to do that instead of just using two hands. Well, you just might need to do something with your free hand and you can still be consistant in teaching your horse to neck rein that way, just remember, just enough pressure on the bit to keep your horse’s nose going into the turn…in fact, you still…no matter how long you have been neck reining your horse, want to keep his nose into the turn…I don’t mean let him curve his body…just don’t allow him to throw his nose “out” of the circle, or he will be unbalanced….it takes a while to make a true reining horse, a good one will keep his whole body straight and just pivot his back feet…a REALLY good one will pivot only one back foot. One more thing I forgot, do it slow, slow with your hands…let him figure it out…if you will watch a good reiner, you will see that he isn’t even moving his hands that fast, he is being quiet, deliberate and light….and simpley picks up on his reins and if his horse is truly “one the bit”, he has a hair trigger…and they don’t get that by pulling on them…sometimes it takes years to get it done…patience is the operative word when it comes to teaching neck reining.
