Help with Natural Horsemanship?
I recently started Parelli with my horse. She started out well and learned quickly. Now whenever I try to start something new (such as sideways) she always disengages her hindend or backup, thats all she ever does anymore. Also she is very resistant to pressure. Any tips?
Anytime you teach your horse anything….you need to pay attention to what you want vs what answer your horse gives you.
If you are asking the horse to step sideways and she disengages her hip, you are putting too much emphasis on the hip and not enough on the shoulder. It’s got to be an even pressure. Pressure on the hip then it moves and then pressure on the shoulder and it moves and then pressure on the hip and it moves then pressure on the shoulder and it moves.
If you just stay stuck on the hip, the horse will give you only the hip movement, so pay attention to how you are asking and how much pressure you are using, too. Also, where you put the release of pressure.
If you release the pressure when she disengages and leave it at that, then you’re telling her that’s all you wanted. So, that’s all you’re going to get.
If she backs up and you give up asking her for what you really wanted…then you gave her a release of pressure at the wrong time and she’ll just think you want her to back up so that’s all you will get.
As for she’s being very resistent to pressure, this can be a result of too much desensitizing and not enough sensitizing. Again, your timing is essential so that you don’t turn your requests into nagging.
If you’re asking your horse to move her shoulder away from you and you keep using the same level of pressure…over and over and over…and never raise it when needed or take it away when she responds correctly, you’re nagging and this will frustrate the horse to shut down, ignore pressure and resent it…she’ll turn resistent.
I suggest if you’re starting the Parelli training to go back and reread or watch the DVDs you’ve got carefully, especially to the parts about how to use pressure and release properly.
If done correctly…your horse should be more responsive not less. If you apply the lessons incorrectly, you get a sluggish dull horse. It’s not the lesson but how you’re using it that you need to find out what’s missing/going wrong.
