Natural Horsemanship Equipment

Opening a riding stable?

I have a few questions, all of which are under opening a horse back riding stable. I have enough experience, land, equipment, time, etc. And most importantly, I have horses.

So, here are my questions. Please answer as many as you can.

1. Do you have to have a certain amount of experience?
2. Do you have to have permission from the state to teach riding?
3. Do your horses have to pass a test to make sure that they are safe?
4. Are there a bunch of legal matters? (list as many as you know)
5. Do you have to have a license or certificate or something like that to do this?
6. Do you have to teach your students traditional riding? (I am very into natural horsemanship. I would like to pass this onto my students- does anything hold me back?)
7. When a parent enrolls their child in riding class, does that mean that they agree for their child to participate in anything that I say?

If you have suggestions for opening a stable, feel free! I will add details soon. Thanks!

1. No
2. You need a business license. You will have to check your individual state to see if they require any other type of license.
3. No
4. Mostly, insurance and safety issues. Liability insurance for a riding stable is going to be very high.
5. See answer 2
6. What you teach is your choice and people can take it or leave it. I would offer options for traditional and natural.
7. No , that should be spelled out in an agreement signed by them before their child ever gets on one of your horses. Make sure what activities you are planning are in the agreement. I would get special permission if you intend to take them out of an indoor arena or outdoor corral.

I would also put a clause in the agreement for lessons about how early they can be dropped off for a lesson and when they have to be picked up. Otherwise you can find yourself being a babysitting service.

The most important issue here is your insurance, get the best you can. I was told by several lawyers that those little one page disclaimers that say they won’t hold you responsible if the child is hurt aren’t worth the paper they are written on.

After you’ve gotten this up and running and have enough students I would recommend a show for the students. They can show their parents what they have learned. Also advertise that you are having it, some people who aren’t sure whether it is worth it for their kids to have lessons may come and be swayed, make it an open house type day.
