Is parrot mouth in horses passed on to offspring?
I recently rescued a miniature mare that is parrot mouth(she has a bad underbite). Just found out she is breed and was wondering what the chances are that she will pass this on to her babies. My vet said it is a rare condition and she probably won’t. I just wanted to hear form people who might have been in the same situation. Did it get passed on or not. She has an outstanding bloodline and awsome confirmation other than her teeth.
Yes, Parrot Mouth is genetic. Its probably wise not to breed this mare.
In the wild a horse born with this defomity was never intented to survive or breed, (the animal would not beable to graze enough food to sustain a healthy life, where they would either starve to death or too week to evade prediators).
I definitly wouldn’t breed her, you can’t do anything about the foal growing inside her, but many times in genetics, some times it will be passed in genes, so her foal may not present this deformity, but down the line, with in her offsprings blood lines, will probably have a few active Parrot mouth deformities. That is why I say not to continue ther blood line, your just passing on the deformity, if not to her immediate offspring, then to their offspring.

Minnie Arrives at Grannie Annie’s Place (Minnie and Friends) $2.99 Minnie Arrives at Grannie Annie’s Place When Minnie, a baby miniature donkey, arrived, I fell in love at first sight. Not only was she beautiful, with soulful brown eyes, a rich brown coat with a cross on her shoulders, and a white-nosed expressive face, but she came to me at once, and stretched up to be hugged. I was absolutely enthralled, as were all the other humans, and at least half the ot… |
