Should I get a blanket for my mini?
My miniature horse doesn’t have a blanket, and normally he looks like a little wooly mamoth, so I never thought he needed one. But this winter has been really wet, and the other horses aren’t letting him in the shelters when it’s snowing or raining. This morning he was wet and coated in ice. Should I get him a waterproof blanket for when the weather is really wet or will this hurt him more than help him? I know that blankets can flatten their hair and keep them colder. But it’s worse for him to be wet, isn’t it?
Actually, he’s dapple grey. And I don’t think his color has anything to do with whether I should get him a blanket or not.
Not really, they repel water also, they dont get wet the skin like we do.
The only time I blanket is if they are visibly cold and with a bin full of hay, still shivering. I have 2 mules that will not go in the shelter and they are geriatrics and stay warm. They haven’t needed any blankets and its been sub zero here at times.
But they also have all the hay they need during those times.
