teaching your horse to lunge?
I want to know how to teach my horse to lunge. I dont have a round pen and no one to help me really. If i try he keeps moving in towards me .. doesnt know what i want from him. suggestions please
And yes he is broken, only for about 4 months though. He has just turned 4 and so he is young.
I had the very same problem with my horse. He was ridden by the previous owner, but never lunged. I hired a trainer to help me and this is what she had me do: Face your horse and stand at his shoulder, with a couple of feet between. Use the lunge whip to move his hind end so that he circles around you. Once he is moving around you, let the lunge line out so that the circle keeps expanding. Try this on both sides. There are many other factors to properly lunging the horse, and also different techniques depending on what the purpose of your lunging is. But, this is a simple and easy way to get him started and moving around you. Good luck!!
