What are the different methods, for producers, of selling their beef?
Can you please give a clear discription of the following :
a) Saleyards
b) Over-the-hooks (OTH)
c) Paddock Sales
d) Computer Aided Livestock Marketing (CALM)
a) Saleyards: The producer takes his livestock sales yard where the cattle are sold at auction. His interest in the cattle ceases when the auctioneer drops the gavel and he has no chance for further income.
b) Over-the-hooks (OTH): He sells direct to a meat packing firm and they control the meat from there.
c) Paddock Sales: He sells the livestock on his place to a buyer who controls the meat or the live animal from thereon.
d) Computer Aided Livestock Marketing (CALM) He sells or finds the buyer on a website where he can negotiate the terms of the sale.
He can also take his cattle to a meat processor and then sell the meat to his circle of consumers directly. If he is raising specialty beef this may be his best method of obtaining a return for his extra work.
