prices of corn and meat?
As you know the price of corn, because of the demand for ethanol fuel, has increased by almost 70 percent. The interesting news is that the high price of corn has impacted the price of meat and other products in the US, since corn is the main feed for livestock. I don’t know if the use of ethanol blended with gasoline will reduce the price of gasoline in this country, but probably, consumers will be concerned about the higher prices of meat.
What is your economic analysis of this situation?
That’s very prescient of you, knowing that an increase in the price of feedstock (corn) brings about an increase in the price of livestock (cattle, live hogs, pork bellies).
The amount of Corn produced this year is also a record breaking crop. What goes almost unnoticed however, is that after sales the supply is near average yearly lows. Global demand for food is leveraged upwards year after year with no end in sight. This puts a premium on water supply for crops as well as judicious crop rotations, somethings that always seem to get out of hand.
Ethanol, for better or worse, is a break even proposition. Cleaner burning fuels cheaply mass produced will ultimately come from alternative sources (Natural gas, electricity, batteries). Ethanol just isn’t any cheaper to produce after cost-averaging production (water use specifically).
