Livestock Hauling

What to do with Donkey?

Since my father-in-law fell ill he had to get rid of all his livestock. We hauled the cattle off to an auction and brought the horses to our place, however he still has a donkey that he wants us to keep as it was always with the horses. I hate the thing and am half afraid of it. When go to feed it starts kicking and literally knocks the bucket out of your hand. We want to respect the mans wishes but worry about safety as we have kids and two colts. We have thought about putting up a seperate pasture for it but are afraid since it was always with the horses this will make it worse. Any suggestions as to SAFTELY keep the stupid thing.

Find someone who’s into donkeys, and ask them to teach you how to handle the guy. The friend might also be able to assess the donkey to see if he needs a little training in manners.

I’m not a donkey expert, but I have had wonderful results retraining different species of animals using the Clicker training method. You could reinforce him standing quietly and leading properly, and soon he’ll learn what he’s expected to do.

I don’t agree with making kids the reason you need to get rid of him. You clearly don’t like him personally. It’s ok for you to not love donkeys, but don’t rationalize your donkeyhate with statements about donkeys being “unsafe”. Keep in mind the average Amish/Mennonite kids work with donkeys (and much larger animals) all the time…. the safety comes from knowing how to handle him.

I do think it’s sweet of you to look after your FIL’s animals. I’m sure he really appreciates it. Sounds like these pets mean a lot to him. Just keep reminding yourself your’e doing this for your FIL not for the donkey. :-)

Worse comes to worse, see if your FIL will let you find a good home for the donkey? Some animals rescues do donkeys.
