How can i teach my horse to do these TRICKS?????
can u teach me how to teach my horse to do the following?
-bow
-lay down
-shake (give hoof)
Clicker training. There are great websites and books. After reading part of the book, I was able to teach my Andalusian what the clicker meant and to fetch a small traffic cone in 2, 20 min sessions!! It is so cool!
He bows, fetches a dog toy and squeaks and shakes it, gives hugs, kisses, plays soccer, plays basket ball, honks a horn, opens a mailbox and gives me the contents, pushes a shopping cart, and lots of other little things I have taught him on a whim. Most of these activities only take 10 minutes or so to shape once they understand that the clicker is the audible mark of doing the exact thing you ask at just the right moment.
We are working on Spanish Walk this winter. Getting that smooth is taking more time, but we’ll get it!
I don’t recommend teaching “shake hands” as they do these tricks off cue as well as on, and you don’t want him hitting you with his hoof when you don’t expect it, and trust me, he will.
I could try to explain it to you, but it is a bit of a process, and the videos, pictures and text on the websites have already done the work.
You can use the “click that teaches” when you are riding and he gives you a great leg yield or roll back, and they pick things up so much faster when you have established the communication.
My horse loves to hear my truck drive up; he starts yelling for me. He has the happiest attitude toward work of any horse I’ve worked with. I’ve trained my other horses too, but this guy has really taken to it.
I’ve trained dogs, cats, horses, and a goldfish (with a penlight instead of a click, just to see if I could!) It works fast, and you don’t have to keep using the clicker on an ongoing basis. If you follow their instructions, you don’t end up with a horse that “mugs” you for a treat. (I admit that with the Andalusian, he can get a little pushy; I’ve done it better since with the others.)
