I want to buy 1,000 cattle. How much would this be?
This is no joke.. I am looking to start a business raising cattle and selling the meat… I learned that a single cow/bull costs around $500 however I wanted to know with such a bulk purchase how much would the unit price would be.
There are so many factors associated with this question that is simply impossible to give you a number.
What breed?
What age?
What are you planning on doing here?
You are trying to turn a multi million dollar business plan into something extremely simplistic. To raise 1000 cattle you would need mass amounts of grazing acreage along with barn facilities, tractors, fencing, fertilizer, planting equipment. You don’t just buy 1000 calves, let them grow to maturity and slaughter them. Generally you would start small with what is called a cow-calf operation. You buy seed stock from reputable breeders. I would suggest bringing someone knowledgeable on cattle with you so that you are not buying crap stock which in turn will give birth to animals with crap traits.
From there every year your cattle will calve…hopefully. You then weed out the ones that didn’t calve and cull them from the herd. You sell the calves not the initial investment. If you have seed stock that is throwing a good calve consecutively year after year and you want to expand your operation you could keep some of the stock that is born.
If you expect to go into this business with the mindset you have now run for the hills because you are set up for a tragic loss. And I highly doubt you have the money to purchase 1000 head of cattle anyways.
And one more thing if you are raising 1000 calves you would need thousands of acres of hay fields to get them through the winter unless you are feeding them on grain. Just more expenses to think about. You would need to sell your house and pitch a tent to buy hay for 1000 cows over a winter.
