What does it mean to lease a horse?
I really want to buy a horse and I’ve got no riding experience but people suggested leasing a horse and getting lessons how does it work, if i lease a horse is it basically renting it and then giving it back? or do you have the option to buy it afterwards. Because if i get attached to the horse and have to give it back i don’t want to do that i want to own my own horse one day! HELP PLEASE? I’m so lost. Also if you lease a horse does it stay at the real owners farm or can you board it or take it home?
When you have a horse on loan, you take full responsibility for it (riding, teeth, vet checks including jabs, teeth, shoeing, but the owner still owns it – you cannot sell the horse on etc and a loan agreement must be drawn up and signed as there are so many stories of horses going missing whilst out on loan.
With ponies, they’re often given back to the owner when outgrown so they can go and teach someone else to ride. When they do go back to the owner, just think they’re going to make someone else very happy and teach them the things that they taught you whilst you had them.
You can only buy a horse after loaning it if the advert says “for loan with view to buy” or something similar.
You can take the horse to your own yard if the owner agrees, but if the advert says “must stay at current yard” and is too far for you to travel, keep looking.
If you’ve no riding experience you MUST have lessons before thinking about having a horse on loan. You might just like horses, but may not like riding or may be allergic to them or something.
