Leasing a horse? How much freedom do you get? ?
I am not an experienced rider but I know the basics ![]()
I would like to know
1) if you lease a horse would you be able to call it your own and visit it whenever you want? Do you have to join the classes at the stables or can you do your own thing?
2) how much would it cost on average to lease a horse and what thing do you need to buy around it? Like feed, tack?
3) do you need insurance or a license? For on road riding?
4) do you have to lease for a certain amount of time or could you stop, if you gave them some time in advance?
Thanks for all your help <3

Leasing can be done in many forms. Full lease, half lease or even a share lease. If it is not a full lease, where you have full access to the horse, sometimes you share a horse with the owner or with another paying lease person.
I’m not in your country, but I will try to answer some of your questions
1) if you lease a horse would you be able to call it your own and visit it whenever you want? Do you have to join the classes at the stables or can you do your own thing?
- If you have a full lease you could ride the horse and see them when you want. If you have a part lease then you will most likely have set days that your allowed to visit and/or see the horse. Some leases are simply turn up and ride, others are clean stables and actually care for the horse. Choose what suits your lifestyle and time schedule best.
If you lease from a private person you can most likely do what you want to with the horse. But if you lease from a lesson barn, they could make you ride in their lesson program or even stay on their property. Some leases are to keep the horse on your own property, but many are to leave them where they currently are so the owners can keep and eye on them.
2) how much would it cost on average to lease a horse and what thing do you need to buy around it? Like feed, tack?
- I wont go into money figures for your country. What you need to provide is also dependant on the arrangement with the owner. Some owners insist you use their tack (mainly saddle) because it is fitted to the horse. Most owners would not want you changing their bit either.
Having said that, some don’t want their expensive gear used by strangers and make you supply your own. Feed also depends on where the horse is kept. If you take it home, your going to be responsible for all the money costs. If the horse is currently boarded, then the feed may be included in the horses current living price (most likely).
Personally you should only have to supply a helmet and safe riding boots in my opinion.
3) do you need insurance or a license? For on road riding?
- I would highly doubt it. From friends I have in your country they have never mentioned needing a license to ride on the road. You would of course make sure the horse is safe in traffic before riding it out on the road. If your worried about personal injury, it would never hurt to have some personal injury insurance.
4) do you have to lease for a certain amount of time or could you stop, if you gave them some time in advance?
- Another thing that will depend on every individual agreement. Make sure you get all of this in writing and be very clear about the terms before you sign it. Some are for 1 year or 6 month blocks, others are on a monthly basis. If your concerned about being locked into a horse for a year, then negotiate terms that you feel comfortable with.
Also ask what happens if the horse gets sold (do you get first option?). What happens if the horse dies, gets injured? Who is responsible for vet fees, worming, farrier bills.
There are lost of costs for horses and some leases are very expensive and the owners actually make a profit!! So do your home work and look at several horses and what costs are in your area.
Good luck
