What is the schedule for a horse (feeding horse, grooming, riding, cleaning stalls, etc.)?
What is your horses schedule? I want to know how to adapt it around school hours (8:00-3:45). Any tips, also, about cleaning stalls quickly and controlling a ’studdy’gelding? I mostly want the first question answered, but any tips might earn you a best answer! As detailed as possible, please!
Through out middle/high school. My schedule was roughly this:
Feed at 6:30am (boarding at stables. Worked stable rent off by feeding morning/evening. Clean two stalls of owners).
School from 7:30am to 3:pm. (Pratice to 5:30pm). Horses from 6pm-10pm. (feed/groom/clean etc). I sometimes would do my homework out there. More quiet and comfortable than at home setting.
Some changes once in awhile:
Junior year. I was able to go out there sometimes during lunch or after school when practice was cancelled/short. I had a vehicle.
Senior year: I was able go out there for 2 hours during lunch everyday as I drove from an adult course at adult school (Law enforcement advance class for high schoolers) and my 5th period teacher, who was my 6th period too didn’t care. (ROTC and I was Company Commander).
The rest of the schedule stayed the same.
As far as weekends, mostly spent all weekend with them. Feeding was the same. I would turn out, clean, groom, saddle, ground manners, ride, cool down, un-saddle and either rinsed off (bath) or groom again once they dried off. Since I have multi horses, I would ride for about an hour and half each and then switch. All depends on the day and what each one needed. sometimes I would go out on the trail if I had someone with me. (river =’s bums, jerks, wild dogs and potential accidents).
I turn my horses out when I clean stalls. Mine like to hoover over me or try to knock the wheel barrel over. It gives them time to kick out, run etc before I ride.
If for some reason I need to clean and can’t put them out (in a hurry etc). I give them something to eat. Mine ALWAYS picks food over what I am doing lol.
A studdly gelding requires lots of hours and trainings. When was he gelded and how old? Depends on how studdly he tries to get, depends on what measures you would need to do. If hard to control and can cause danger to you or others, can always get him a stud chain (lightly use!) to remind him of his manners while walking. Most of it is just working with him and reminding him. If he walks too fast infront of you, turn him away from you in a circle and repeat. walking away from the situation that he is re-acting from. Firm with words of “no” etc.
Now it is:
Mine are on full board til we move in September. They get fed at 7:30am. Fed again at 4:00pm. I clean their stall (which we worked out 50 off board a month to do so as I like to clean my own stalls). Depending on the day since we are military with one vehicle, between 8 to 2pm I can be out there. They have a private turn out pasture connected to their stall we pay extra for.
In September, we plan to rent property to have the horses with us instead of boarding.
