Any ideas for cheap stall flooring/installation?
I have a stall with big gravel rocks in and outside the stall in the run. The people before us used the stall for storage and not for a horse so they put gravel in and outside of it, what a pain. I am considering buying stall mats but I don’t know how to go about putting them in and what do I do with all of that gravel? Can I cover it? How much does laying cement down in a 12 by 12 foot open stall cost? There is no stall gate yet, it would be like a 10-12” gate. We don’t have a lot of money.
My horse is 14 months old, I don’t want his feet to go bad.
I would remove at least some of the gravel and add agricultural lime, which is a crushed lime and is able to be compacted into a level surface. It is good for drainage, and if you install rubber mats over it , it will give you a good base for the mats. I have a run in shelter, and we excavated for drainage before building the structure. We dug 3 feet down and layered large rock, gravel, and ag lime, then had it compressed to flatten and level it. Each end of the shelter is matted over the lime, and it works out well. The drainage is excellent and there is never any damp or urine/ammonia odor since the lime absorbs odors.
