4-H State Horse Show Classes!!?
I am attending the VA State 4-h show in September and wanted to know what I should be practing with my horse. I’m in W/T/C hunter classes, hunter equitation, and hunter showmanship. What type of patters should I practice? Dismounting? Backing? Pivoting? What all should we be practicing for our show?
Thanks
Eq. Classes do not jump. Is there a specific pattern though?
We reguarly compete in Halter/Showmanship, W/T/C but I wasn’t sure if there was anything different. In rule book, it stated that you may be asked to back, dismount/mount, and some other stuff.
Well it sounds like you have everything but the equitation covered. In Hunter equitation its based on you making the horse work vs in wtc its about how the horse moved. For that class you will want your upward and downward transitions to be nice and rounded, also your cues to be subtle and light and your horse should react instantly and smoothly. Chances are you will have a pattern to preform that will include walk, trot, canter, and back (I would be shocked at a dismount and remount) and important things to remember is what side of the cone to stay on, plan ahead for whats coming next (those cones show up in a hurry), do the pattern as drawn not how you think it should be… lots of times judges like to sneak in and do something off as a trick, LOOK UP!, keep your circles pretty and even and your lines straight, and take it step by step to make it smooth. Slow and perfect wins every time compared to rushed and harried. If you google Equitation Patterns you should be able to find a few sites where they have patterns posted you could practice.
Oh and if you have a transition/movement at a cone it needs to happen at the cone not before or after and watch you position and seat they need to be spot on!
ETA: there is no set pattern the judge makes them up the day of the show
