How much does a 4th level horse cost?
I am looking for a horse to get my bronze, silver, and well into my gold USDF medals on. My trainer and I agree that I need a horse that knows way more than me in order for me learn how to preform the upper level moves.My trainer and I think I need a horse that is trained to 4th-PSG or trained to 3rd but schooling higher/ shows potential for passage piaffe work. How much do these horses cost (in california)? I was thinking 30,000 – 40,000.
Sorry I left out few things. I am only doing first/ a tiny bit of second now so a horse that is doing 3rd but has piaffe/fei potential would know a lot more than me. Plus the horse would be in training.
You are at about half of what will be needed for the horse that will take you where you indicate you want to go. For the money you mention, you will be getting a horse on the way back down, not on the way up. Which by the way, it a pretty good way to get hold of a great education. I’ve had 2 of them, and would love to be able to find another.
CA and FL are likely to be your best bet, so you are lucky not to have to fly too far to find the gems. The last boy I got was from CA, found for me by Trippe Harding, but he has sadly passed now. I would check at Stephan Peters’ barn and working students.
If you approach dressage judges or upper level clinicians, both of whom travel a lot, they often have information about horses that are competitive and for sale, but not always advertised or on the open market. I had a 20 year speaking relationship with Trippe, so he was happy to look for me. It did take a year, but the horse he found for me has been fabulous (was showing 2nd, schooling 4th), although we are still in training, spending part of the winter in FL for the past 3 years. (now showing 3/4, schooling PSG/I1)
Even in this economy, upper level horses are still going for top dollar.
