My horse starts walking when i mount?
So i have a horse that hasn’t been ridden much. She is not very tall so i dont use a mounting block. She’s fine with me standing by the saddle and shes fine with me putting my foot in the stirrup. But she starts walking when im about to sit on her. I can stand in the stirrup, but before i even sit on her shes walking. How can i get her to stand still? Will bending her head around help?
Even if she isn’t very tall, mounting from the ground can pull the horse’s back over or even out completely, not only that but you will eventually damage the tree of the saddle as well. As PPF has said, once they realise you aren’t going to hurt them, they’ll be more willing to stand for you. I am tall, but will rarely get up from the ground unless I have to.
Don’t get up on her when she walks off, make her stand and keep bringing her back around to the block until she does, if need be for the first few occassions have someone stand beside you and gradually move back. Lots of praise when she stands to be mounted.
Also when you’re up on the horse, do not let them walk forward until YOU ask, they must wait. Again praise her for waiting.
