Therapeutic horse riding instructor career details?
I’ve been thinking recently to become a therapeutic horse riding instructor in the future, but I need a lot more details on the career.
First off, what is the salary? What kind of education/training do I need, skills I need, how I can make this happen, whatever other details that may be useful! Thank you so much!!!!!!
salary is nothing to get too excited about, since you don’t need a degree to do it and it’s fairly easy to find a replacement. i’m 17, and i was asked (by the barn i volunteer at) to get my certification. i think you need to be 18 to be one, but by the time i finished my certification i would be 18. education/training….well, it would be beneficial to start volunteering at a therapeutic riding center now. get to know the drill, begin to understand NARHA (north american riding for the handicapped association), figure out if you even like it, get your foot in the door, etc. it’s a ton of fun at first, but it can get a little monotonous. it’s incredibly rewarding to see how these students progress though. i can’t even begin to tell all of the incredible things i’ve seen. to add to training/edu, it is helpful to have a recreational therapy degree, but like i said before, it isn’t at all necessary. skills…well, you need to know horses and know how to ride. they have an actual riding test (isn’t totally hard, but it isn’t easy either) for when you get your certification. you do a pattern, and you need to know things like diagonals, latterals, know which lead you’re on, etc. you need to know how to groom and tack up (completely by yourself) and you go through a mock lesson with them watching. you have to do everything you would in a lesson (check tack, get the student on, check stirrups, teach the lesson, dismount, etc). there are little things too…things like you need to check tack at least 3 times during the lesson (shh…we don’t do that. i don’t think most barns do. but you need to do it during your test). ehhhhh….i’m out of things to say LOL. i’m sure i’ll think of more. if i do, i’ll add. good luck!
