What are some things a can do with my horse and have fun, riding?
I am starting to get bored with riding because the only thing i do is arena work. I love trail riding but have no one else to go with. Either of my horses are very good alone. Have any ideas of what i can do?
ps. I live on 2 acres of rocks (besides the arena and stalls)
Well, I’ve found that when I get bored of my usual routine, I like to bake my horse some treats. I usually just throw together some stuff that we have in the kitchen, but here is a good website: http://www.moniteausaddleclub.com/horse_treats.htm
Another thing you might want to do is jump your horse for fun, or run a barrel pattern. Or, if you were willing, you could even buy a horse trick book and try your luck at teaching your horses to perform tricks. If you’re feeling artistic, try setting up a photo shoot for your horses.
If you have access to a trailer, you could always take your horses to a lake for a swim or even to a friend’s pasture. I’ve found that if I am in a different place with my horse, the same activities I usually do are a lot more fun. If you usually only ride English, try learning Western. I learned to ride bareback, and this has made riding a lot more fun. Try simply bonding with your horse. Even if you aren’t working with him/her, just laying around can be fun.
Tips:
1. Find a horse club for people your age and join
2. Invest in some trick books
3. Bring along a camera when you go riding
4. Set up a stereo next to the arena so you can listen to music
5. Find and audience!
I wouldn’t suggest you do this unless you are completely confident, but when I get bored with arena work, I like to take my horse for a ride on the old back roads. Sometimes, I even just take him for a walk like a dog.
