What should I know before going?
Hey,
In order to help like pay for lessons and boarding I want to get this job at a local dressage barn that needs a working student. The problem is, I ride hunter. I know nothing really about dressage. I can turn horses out and like groom and muck, clean whatever. It’s just I think it’s stupid to go without knowing anything about dressage. So dressage barn owners and riders what would you want someone to know about dressage. I hope/pray/think that they aren’t looking for an exerciser.

Well, hunters and dressage riders ride quite differently. In the hunters you ride mostly in a half eat, where dressage it’s all about sitting up and using your seat and leg. You should apply for the job anyways! you could learn a lot. I had a student working job for a hunter jumper barn and I learned so much. I probably doubled my knowledge over the summer. Also, make sure this is a paying job because student working jobs don’t usually pay you. They might give you a deal on lessons, or in my case I got to live on site the whole summer. I did a little of everything, I cleaned stalls, helped with the camps, rode a bunch of horses, and helped with various chores. Usually the idea of a student working job is to pick a student and help them learn and gain knowledge. If they were looking for a good rider they would hire a professional.
