As others have said, it depends on what you do. If you want to muck stalls, groom horses, perhaps get involved in training, your grades don’t matter a great deal. However, unless you want to spend the rest of your life at the bottom of the horse-industry jobs, with minimal pay and very little chance for advancement, you need some education.
Moving up into management positions, or having your own equestrian business, depends on having at least some mastery of mathematics, grammatical English and the ability to communicate effectively, and sufficient science to understand basics of nutrition, physiology, and things related to medical issues. If you don’t have at least that much capability, you are always going to be at the bottom of the job heap.
Put another way: if you have good grades in classes that will enable you to go to college and get a degree if you want, you have many options: you could go into a field like racetrack or stable administration and management, the horse sales industry, working on the business side of a horse breeding farm or bloodstock agency; you could become a writer for an equestrian magazine or report on equestrian sports; you could decide to go into research in equine nutrition, physiology, medicine, pharmaceutical; you could decide to go into law and specialize in equine industry cases; many, many options for good jobs that can pay very well.
If you decide to blow off school and just work with horses, unless you are at the absolute top of whatever discipline you choose, you’re stuck with mostly low-paying jobs and even if you’re near the top of your discipline, you’re one bad fall away from permanent unemployment.
Smart people keep their options open. FWIW, I’m 52, and I know an awful lot of people who blew off school and regretted it, and an awful lot of people who had to go back to school as adults when they found they were stuck in dead-end jobs; but I don’t know a single person who did well in school and went on to get a degree who regrets it.
